The eighth annual Boxed In/Break Out features a series of photo collages by Polish American artist, designer, and professor Wioleta Kaminska. Viewers encounter the work as six large-scale, digitally manipulated photographs of merged Icelandic landscapes. The vistas are “illusive visual explorations of moments in nature that remind us of the importance and power of the natural world,” in the words of guest judge Hannah Israel, associate professor of art and gallery director at Columbus State University. The photographs transform the view of the environment as it exists today by formulating new perspectives of the changing world. While overtly inspired by Kaminska’s artist residencies in Iceland, Retreating offers a universal contemplation of the beauty of nature and a subtle invitation to reflect on humankind’s current role in the climate crisis.

IS Video Installation by Wioleta Kaminska

IS means ICE in Icelandic. IS is another video installation from the series Retreating that I have been working on during my artist residency at SIM in Reykjavik. This video collage was composed out of photos I took on both my walks and trips around Iceland. The sound of birds was recorded at a cemetery in Reykjavik and later edited.
