ABOUT THE ARTIST

West Fraser was born in Savannah in 1955. He is a true “Son of The Low Country,” with deep roots in coastal Georgia’s colonial plantation history and roots dating back to 1695 in Dorchester, South Carolina. Fraser came of age on Hilton Head Island, where he developed his love of the coastal environs. An inveterate traveler, he has painted throughout the Caribbean, Central America, Europe, and Scandinavia, yet his passion always draws him back to the marshes and landscape of his beloved Georgia and South Carolina coastline.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Document Savannah’s River and Port with featured artist West Fraser, one of the leading American artists in the representational and plein air tradition. Fraser has built his career on richly painted, atmospheric vistas of cities, coasts, and landscapes throughout the U.S. and internationally—from the pristine Sea Islands of South Carolina and Georgia to the hill towns of Tuscany.

Complementing the Telfair Museums exhibition Port City, Fraser conducts this painting workshop as an introduction to capturing the extraordinary environment of our river and port with oil or acrylic paint en plein air. Fraser focuses on working quickly, entirely on location, making well-designed compositions with emphasis on color and light. Through demonstrations, Fraser shows how to reduce a complex scene to its essence and how to use unified shapes to create a center of interest with strong composition, contrast, and color.

Each student has the opportunity to produce a small work on panel in oil or acrylic paint. The class meets Friday at 4 pm at the Jepson Center to take a personal tour of the Port City exhibition and participate in preliminary preparations and discussion. We meet Saturday morning at 7:30 am on the waterfront, just past the Trustees Garden. There, West Fraser leads a brief discussion of color, composition, and value. Then students set up in a loose group formation to work on individual paintings. On Sunday at 7:30 am, we meet on the grounds of Fort Pulaski. West provides individual mentorship Sunday as students work on their paintings.
