Join us for a special screening of the documentary “The League,” followed by an engaging Q&A with filmmaker Byron Motley. More than a story about baseball, The League reveals how the Negro Baseball Leagues shaped—and were shaped by—America’s cultural and racial history. Against the backdrop of segregation and the long road toward integration, the leagues became a powerful mirror of the nation’s evolving race relations, resilience, and resistance. The film traces this legacy to a pivotal moment in American history: the signing of Jackie Robinson to Major League Baseball—widely regarded as the beginning of the modern Civil Rights Movement. Through powerful storytelling and historical insight, The League invites audiences to reflect on how sports can challenge injustice, spark social change, and help redefine a nation.
The W. W. Law Lecture Series was created to honor the late Westley Wallace Law of Savannah, GA. He was known as “Mr. Civil Rights” due to his commitment to justice and civil rights. In addition to serving as the president of the Savannah chapter of the NAACP from 1950 to 1976, W. W. Law started the 1st annual Savannah Black Heritage Festival in 1988. This festival was successful due to the guidance and leadership of W. W. Law along with the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASAALH), with moral support and general funding from the City of Savannah.
