“Savannah’s First Generation of African American Elite in the New Republic, 1790-1830”

This annual celebration of freedom takes place at the beginning of the month to kick off Juneteenth celebrations in the city and celebrate the Geechee Gullah Heritage of Savannah and the coastal region. Programs include a lecture at historic Second African Baptist Church, a youth workshop on the making of the traditional African thumb piano called the mbira, and a Free Family Day with hands-on activities for all ages and a special performance by the Georgia Sea Island Singers, a group that has preserved and performed African American traditional song since the early 20th century.
