Gari Melchers Collectors’ Society (GMCS) members will have the opportunity to join in on a fascinating conversation about collecting the work of Savannah artist Ulysses Davis (1914–1990), whose fantastical wood sculptures are the subject of Telfair’s current exhibition Created Beasts: Sculpture by Ulysses Davis. Participants will enjoy libations, a special tour of the show with Harry Delorme, director of education and senior curator, and conversation with Atlanta-based collectors David and Janice Miller about their collecting points of focus and the work of Ulysses Davis.

This event is open to Telfair’s affinity group the Gari Melchers Collectors’ Society. Click here to learn about the group and how you could help us shape our permanent collection.

For questions or to RSVP to the event, contact Calli Laundre at 912.790.8807 or laundrec@telfair.org. RSVPs are due by November 7.

Born in Fitzgerald, Georgia, Davis taught himself to carve wood as a child and relocated to Savannah to establish a barbershop where he created his art. This exhibition explores Davis’ sculptures of beasts inspired by biblical stories, as well as fantastic creatures that sprang entirely from his fertile imagination.
