In conjunction with the exhibition Created Beasts: Sculpture by Ulysses Davis, Telfair Museums will present two short films about Davis with discussion to follow. Telfair will screen a segment from the film Missing Pieces: Georgia Folk Art (1977), which includes a rare interview with Ulysses Davis and glimpse inside the barbershop where he created his work. The museum will also screen the documentary short The Vision of Ulysses Davis (2019, 10 minutes).

Afterwards, a conversation on Davis’ art and legacy will take place with artists Richard Law, Willis Hakim Jones, and members of Ulysses Davis’ family.

Missing Pieces is screened courtesy the Georgia Council for the Arts.

Admission is free to this program.

Jepson Center
Telfair presents the first exhibition to focus on depictions of creatures, real and imagined, in the work of noted Savannah wood sculptor Ulysses Davis (1914–1990). Born in Fitzgerald, Georgia, Davis taught himself to carve wood as a child and relocated to Savannah to establish a barbershop where he created his art. This exhibition explores Davis’ sculptures of beasts inspired by biblical stories, as well as fantastic creatures that sprang entirely from his fertile imagination.
