One of a set of six chairs. The Biedermeier furniture style reflects historical events of the period. Under the reign of Napoleon decorative styles were extremely ornate. After his final defeat, the prospering middle class sought simpler lives and furnishings. "Bieder" is a German word meaning common, or plain. "Meier" is a very common German surname. Biedermeier is essentially Empire furniture with all excessive decoration removed.
