A highly-regarded printmaker, draughtsman, illustrator, and teacher, Joseph Pennell is celebrated for his intricate architectural etchings as well as his atmospheric renderings of the skylines of New York, London, and his native Philadelphia. However, he is perhaps best known for his role in composing the definitive contemporary biography of his longtime friend James Abbott McNeill Whistler, which Pennell co-authored with his wife, Elizabeth Robbins Pennell.
