Born in England, Boughton moved to Albany, New York, with his parents when he was a small child. He later moved to New York City and experienced some success as a self-taught illustrator and painter. Around 1860, he traveled to Paris to undertake formal artistic training. Boughton moved from Paris to England, where he continued to study and work, eventually becoming an expatriate. Although Boughton primarily became known for his large historical pictures, Gari Melchers selected this small but charming cottage interior for the Telfair’s collection in 1907.
