The cool color palette of Henry Golden Dearth’s Ice Boats on the Hudson almost allows the viewer to feel the chilly winds that sweep across the Hudson River. Possibly painted at the Knickerbocker Ice Company docks at the foot of Hook Mountain, the painting bears strong similarities to a Hudson River scene painted at around the same time by Gari Melchers. Melchers personally purchased this painting, and later donated it to the Telfair’s collection. Dearth was a native of Rhode Island who, like many of his artistic contemporaries, divided his time between New York and Europe.
