Young Girls of Savannah was acquired by Telfair Museums in 2017 and is on view here for the first time.

A rare image of everyday life in Savannah in 1954, it portrays two young girls walking on West Gwinnett Street with an elevated railroad track in the background. Artist Phillip Hampton served as professor and director of the art department at what is now Savannah State University from 1952 to 1969 and enjoyed a noteworthy career as an artist, educator, and advocate for fellow African American artists.
