Chuck Close’s Self-Portrait is one of a collection of works donated to the Telfair by twenty-two artists in honor the late scholar and MOMA curator, Kirk Varnedoe, who was a native of Savannah. The Varnedoe Collection, now on view in the Levitt and Varnedoe galleries in the Jepson Center, features work by Close as well as other contemporary artists championed by Varnedoe, including Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, and Richard Avedon.
