Job Summary and Key Objectives:

The Maintenance Manager ensures a high standard of presentation and functionality of the museum to the public at all times. The Maintenance Manager needs to be versatile and prepared to assist with a variety of tasks.  The Maintenance Manager oversees contracted janitorial team, oversees and assists with event set up and break down, conducts general maintenance on the Museums’ three sites as directed, and assists with outside contractors.

The Maintenance Manager works closely with the Buildings Curator, Assistant Buildings Curator, Director of Operations and the entire staff to accomplish the goals of Telfair Museums.


Key Responsibilities and Tasks

General Duties

  • Perform routine maintenance on buildings including painting, surface cleaning, changing lightbulbs, repairing door handles and locks, minor plumbing and electrical repairs, and equipment repair.
  • Trouble-shoots malfunctioning equipment or building systems
  • Perform daily inspections of buildings and spaces for overall maintenance, paying special attention to the public areas, both interior and exterior, and alert supervisor to any unusual areas that need to be addressed, such as graffiti, vegetation, or staining.
  • Direct contracted janitorial staff, or perform solo when required, general cleaning of all Telfair interior and exterior spaces. Keep supervisor apprised of contracted cleaning company’s performance.
  • Pick up from and deliver interdepartmental mail daily to the Jepson Center, Telfair Academy and Owens-Thomas House.
  • Order all necessary materials needed for completion of duties and ensure that all cleaning supplies are approved for safe use on building materials.
  • Assist Facilities and Operations staff as needed.
  • Along with the rest of the Facilities Team, provides afterhours or weekend site repairs or addresses building emergencies.
  • The Maintenance Manager is responsible for managing his or her time efficiently and productively.

Event Duties

  • Attend bi-weekly pre-event meetings, plan event site prep and breakdown, book housekeeping staff for events
  • Oversee and perform the housekeeping duties associated with events to include ensuring paperwork is received, events are staffed appropriately for housekeeping, setups and tear downs are completed on time, spaces are returned to their normal state in a clean fashion, and completed paperwork is submitted in a timely manner.
  • Ensure that Inventory event equipment and supplies are properly cleaned and stored between events.
  • Follow-up events with event staff to help ensure removal of all outside contracted equipment and supplies, and to make sure all spaces are left in a properly cleaned state.


Minimum Qualifications and Education:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Previous professional maintenance experience
  • Proficient with, and experience safely using paints and basic chemicals, hand tools and power tools
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred
  • Knowledge of safe use of cleaning chemicals
  • Ability to conduct work with great care, follow specific instructions, and provide a variety of services to the museum.
  • Full time position. Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; must be able to occasionally work evenings, weekends and some holidays.
