Beat the heat this year with Telfair Museums’ 2011 summer art camps.
Savannah, GA- Whether your budding artist loves fashion, photography, crafts, or even history, one of the Telfair summer art camps is sure to entertain and educate while keeping the summertime blues at bay. From June through August, Telfair Museums will offer seven different weeklong full and half-day camps for students ages 4 through 16. Taught by professional artists and educators, programs feature hands-on activities, access to supplies and equipment, visits to the museum’s exhibitions, and an exhibition of campers’ projects at the Jepson Center.
This summer’s programs begin with Get Crafty! Southern Arts Camp for ages 8 to 11 featuring lessons from local craft artists in various media, including clay and fibers. The half-day Artful Afternoons Camp for ages 6 to 8 focuses on enhancing appreciation for fine art through tours of Telfair exhibits as well as visual and hands-on experiences. Campers ages 6 to 8 can explore various media taught by local artists while learning to give constructive criticism on artwork at the Art with the Pros! Studio Art Camp, which also includes tours, lunch in Telfair Square and games in the Jepson Center’s ArtZeum.
Students ages 12 to 15 with an eye for fashion can flex their creative muscles at the Fashionista! Fashion Camp, back this year by popular demand. Campers will participate in daily fashion challenges, discuss career opportunities, explore accessory design and construct a piece from conception to completion, including producing fashion illustrations, inspiration boards and a runway show for families and friends. At The Mysteries of Telfair Museums Camp for ages 6 to 8, history detectives will unlock the 125-year-old mysteries of the Telfair Museums by getting a behind-the-scenes look at all three buildings while collecting clues and facts, meeting characters from the past, learning about museum careers and creating an exhibition of their very own.
The season’s programs conclude with The Five Senses Art Camp, where campers ages 4 to 6 can see, hear, touch, taste, and smell art, hosted by Mary Telfair herself. Campers will visit museum exhibitions and the ArtZeum and create artwork while exploring perception through their five senses.
Remember, it pays to join! Telfair Museums members save on camp fees, which range from $100 to $235. Registration is limited, so visit telfair.org for more information or call Kip Bradley at 912.790.8823 to sign up today. Don’t miss this year’s summer adventures!
