Telfair Ball 2013 Live & Silent Auction Items

This year’s auction celebrates the magnificent collection of masterworks now on display from the Uffizi Gallery in a most spectacular fashion. Each auction item brings to the highest bidder a sense of the characteristics of the Renaissance. Whether you choose to travel to Las Vegas, New York or Paris, you’ll be surrounded by incredible light and bright colors, highlighting harmonious architectural space such as that painted by Michelangelo. The thrill of the hunt at nearby Derry Plantation, as well as the beauty and elegance of Palmetto Bluff would, no doubt, have been greatly appreciated by the Duke and Duchess of Urbino, while the exquisite attention to detail and setting demonstrated in the Trustees Dinner and at Local 11ten would have pleased the most discriminating member of the Medici family. Botticelli might have added a bangle to the wrist of a female subject, had one such as this been available to him. The light, bright colors and harmonious architectural spaces featured in tonight’s artwork would surely have received approving nods from Raphael, Donatello and Caravaggio. We invite you, tonight, to re-engage the Renaissance…becoming our community’s sophisticated leaders of diplomatic skills and culture, whose patronage of the arts led to what many acknowledge as the single most important era of mankind.

Donated by Mr. Robert Lynah Harrison
Valued at $8,000

Just over the Talmadge Bridge, a plot of land was christened “Fife Plantation,” and its history can be traced to 1732, at which time it was surveyed for and granted by King George II to James Bullock on September 19 of that year. The ensuing years have seen this land used for running cattle, growing rice and, now, as a family foundation dedicated to the preservation of wetlands, maintaining the historical integrity of its remaining rice fields and water structures, and for educational purposes. Surrounded as we are by historic traditions, the gift of this pheasant hunt at Fife Plantation to the Telfair Live Auction constitutes a linear connection from the past to the present in a most delightful way. Hosted by Robbie Harrison, this pheasant shoot is reminiscent of an Old-World event that you will never forget! Invite eleven other shooters to join you for a competitive and exhilarating afternoon, during the 2013-2014 shooting season. Your English-style hunt will be complete with shooters outfitted in tweed jackets, breeks, shooting shirts and ties. Spouses are invited to observe and partake in the post-hunt festivities, complete with hors d’oeuvres and cocktails. How wonderful it is to enjoy the marriage of these English traditions, still running true even in our modern-day South!

This stunning Oushak rug is approximately 40 years old, measures 14’6″ by 13’, and will provide a dramatic focal point in your entry hall, dining room, living room or den. Oushaks are distinctive for the “weave within a weave” by which they are fashioned, and this one features vibrant reds, blues and greens of vegetable dye in the 100% wool threads. An heirloom from a Savannah family, this beautiful rug will no doubt become an equally treasured piece of your family’s traditions.

Donated by Dr. Preston Russell, Atwell’s Art & Frame
Valued at $7,000

Iconic Savannah artist Preston Russell makes a lovely gift to the Telfair Ball this year, in the form of this acrylic painting of the sunlit façade of an unassuming yet captivating downtown home. The artists represented in our Uffizi exhibition would certainly give an approving nod to Dr. Russell’s bold, experimental use of perspective and to the manner in which he captured the crisp, clean light of a winter afternoon. Painted in 2001, the 18”x 24” image is dramatically framed by Lisa Atwell…perhaps to become your new, favorite address?

Donated by Ray Ellis Gallery
Valued at $8,000

Springtime in Savannah’s centerpiece park was never felt so fully, nor captured so evocatively until the Telfair’s great friend, Ray Ellis, created this lovely painting in the spring of 2011. Unquestionably the crown jewel of our lovely parks and squares, Forsyth’s features include the fountain at her north end which is a constant draw to locals and tourists alike. Rendered in watercolor, the painting features long cooling shadows on the verdant lawn which are offset by brilliant blooms of pink azaleas and the gleam of clean white marble. The images are softly impressionistic, but so recognizable that one can practically hear the splash of water in the fountain. Framed in gold with a gold inner mat, this beautiful original painting measures 23”x 28 1⁄2” and is surely to appreciate in value.
