Telfair docents have the opportunity to learn from visiting artists and curators. Here, David Rubin Curator of the Psychedelic exhibition gives a gallery talk for Telfair docents.
With docent training right around the corner, it’s pretty safe to say that my excitement level is at a ridiculous high. I started this position around the same time last year and like the docent trainees I was responsible for, I was also just like them. With so much to learn coming into my position, I had absolutely no idea how to approach it at the time. The docents I worked with guided me through this process. Because of this, I’m ready to welcome new people, new interests and new opinions.
This is where you come in. Yes, you. The one reading this blog post.
I am finding more and more that collaboration and communication stems from common experiences. Docent training fosters this relationship. I cannot begin to tell you how many people appreciate their time at Telfair Museums because of a docent. You are our greatest resource. As a docent trainee, you are exposed to opportunities that allow you to learn and adapt from one another. In addition, you receive training from a museum staff that excels within their field. You work with veteran docents, observing tour techniques and methods. Most importantly, you are encouraged to develop your own docent style.
After graduating, our wonderful volunteer docents provide nearly all tours for thousands of visitors of all ages at the Telfair Museums’ Jepson Center and Telfair Academy sites. As one of the museums art ambassadors you have the opportunity to interact with local visitors and with tourists from countries all over the world.
So, get involved! Be a docent!
Docent training orientation is Wednesday, August 31st at 3pm in the Jepson Center Luck Boardroom. Official training begins Thursday, September 8th. Any questions? Just give me a call at 912.790.8827 or you can email me at email@example.com.
Be a part of something great and have fun with it!
I’ll see you soon.
