Telfair Academy

Christopher Aristide Desbouillons Murphy; Jefferson’s Barber Shop Christopher Aristide Desbouillons Murphy; Untitled (Moses Chapel, Guerard Street, Frogtown)

Christopher Aristide Desbouillons Murphy (1902-1973), commonly known as Christopher Murphy, Jr., was one of Savannah’s most accomplished and beloved artists. Born and raised in Savannah, he studied at the Art Students League in New York, where he was trained in watercolor, drawing, etching, and oil. Murphy received numerous national awards and accolades for his work, which was especially beloved in Savannah for its warm, faithful depiction of the city’s buildings, streets, and characters. The Telfair is pleased to organize the first large-scale retrospective examination of Murphy’s work, which includes 120 works drawn from numerous local private and corporate collections as well as from the museum’s own holdings and those of the Morris Museum of Art in Augusta.
