Whistler:
Modern and Contemporary Prints from the Telfair’s Collection,
Feb. 13 - Aug. 2, 2007
In
last winter’s exhibition Durer to Whistler: The Art of
the Print, the Telfair presented fine examples of Western printmaking
from the 15th to the early 20th century, culminating with the work
of pioneering artist James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903). Whistler
and the printmakers in his circle challenged conventional views
of printmaking, fostering the belief that it was a valid medium
for original artistic expression at a time when printmaking was
widely considered a purely commercial process, suitable only for
advertisements and illustrations.
Whistler
paved the way for subsequent generations of American and European
printmakers, who would go on to utilize etching, lithography, silkscreen,
and other print media in ways that their 19th-century predecessors
could never have envisioned. Beyond Whistler: Modern and Contemporary
Prints from the Telfair’s Collection will highlight the
many, varied treasures of 20th- and 21st-century printmaking in
the Telfair’s permanent collection. Works by artists as wide-ranging
as Thomas Hart Benton, Chuck Close, Rockwell Kent, Käthe Kollwitz,
Joan Miró, and Elizabeth O’Neill Verner will be included.
