Spirit
of Mexico:
Photographs by Bravo, Levitt, and Perkis
October 11, 2006 - January 28, 2007, Telfair Academy
Beginning on October 11, the Telfair will present Spirit of
Mexico: Photographs by Bravo, Levitt, and Perkis in the Telfair
Academy. This exhibition consists of over 30 black and white photographs
examining Mexico’s landscape and people by renowned photographers
Manuel Alvarez Bravo (Mexican, 1902-2002), Helen Levitt (American,
b. 1913), and Philip Perkis (American, b. 1935).
The exhibition is anchored by a breathtaking portfolio of 15 works
by Manuel Alvarez Bravo, a master photographer who numbers among
the greatest of all Mexican artists. The portfolio, printed in 1977,
contains poetic images of 20th-century life in Mexico ranging in
date from the 1920s through the 1970s. It was generously donated
to the Telfair by Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Oxnard, Jr.
Helen Levitt, whose iconic photographs of New York are the subject
of a solo exhibition in the Jepson Center’s Levitt Gallery
through December 3, also trained her keen photographic eye in Mexico.
Five of Levitt’s Mexican photographs from the 1940s, reflecting
her spontaneous style, are included in Spirit of Mexico.
These works were also donations to the Telfair’s permanent
collection, gifted by Mr. and Mrs. Richard Devereaux and Mrs. Robert
O. Levitt.
The Telfair has also been fortunate to receive as gifts from Helen
Levitt a number of Mexican photographs by Philip Perkis. Perkis
has been a respected photographer and teacher since 1957, and his
work is included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art,
the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and
other fine museums. He has been the recipient of numerous awards
and grants, including a Guggenheim Fellowship.
