Consuming Vision: Selections from the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art,
March 15 - June 10, 2007
This
spring, the Telfair is delighted to host a selection of highlights
from the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art in Kansas City, Missouri.
Founded in 1994, the Kemper boasts an exceptional collection of
works by modern and contemporary artists from around the world.
At the core of the museum's permanent collection is the Bebe and
Crosby Kemper Collection, a gift by the museum's founder, R. Crosby
Kemper, and his wife, Bebe Kemper. This exhibition marks the first
showing of the Kemper’s exciting permanent collection outside
its home in Kansas City.
Representing a variety of disciplines including painting, sculpture,
photography, and mixed media, A Consuming Vision will feature
highlights from the Kemper’s collection created since 1970
by renowned and emerging artists. Works by several pivotal 20th-century
artists, including Andy Warhol, David Hockney, Mark di Suvero, Christian
Boltanski, Romare Bearden, Nathan Oliveira, and Robert Rauschenberg
will be included, along with dynamic pieces by younger artists who
have achieved significant acclaim, such as Georgia’s own Kojo
Griffin, Trenton Doyle Hancock, Damien Hirst, Hung Liu, and Gajin
Fujita. A compelling array of sculpture, including works by Magdalena
Abakanowicz, Chakaia Booker, and Deborah Butterfield, will also
be on view.
The selections on view exemplify the diverse nature of the Kemper’s
collection, which ranges from highly realistic paintings to pure
abstraction to conceptual pieces. Highlights include a classic Warhol
silkscreen, a landscape by David Hockney, and mixed media collages
by Robert Rauschenberg and Romare Bearden. Stylistically, the collection
runs the gamut from the heroic and monumental figurative work of
contemporary realist Stephen Assael, to a Bruce Nauman neon construction,
to a funky velvet floor installation by Polly Apfelbaum. Works by
William Christenberry, Philip-Lorca DiCorcia, and Tina Barney explore
trends in contemporary photography.
A Consuming Vision is bound to appeal to a broad spectrum
of tastes and interests. This exhibition was co-organized by the
Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City, Missouri, and the
Telfair Museum of Art.
