New
Directions in American Drawing,
June 27 - Sep. 23, 2007
In
an era dominated by installation art and electronic media, a growing
number of visual artists are exploring new possibilities within
the time-honored medium of drawing. New Directions in American
Drawing presents 48 drawings created as independent, unique
works of art on paper by 16 contemporary artists.
New Directions reveals the vitality and innovation in American
drawing of the past decade. Reflecting the current diversity that
governs contemporary art, the featured works exhibit a wide range
of approaches to format, process, materials, imagery, concept, and
context. Works range in size from intimate to monumental, and incorporate
various media including watercolor, graphite, colored pencil, conté
crayon, gouache, charcoal, collage, pen and ink, and cut and cast
paper. New Directions includes objects that reveal introspective
musings, explore contemporary life through autobiographical narratives,
depict abstract scientific theories, and offer new perspectives
on humanity’s relationship to its environment.
This exhibition will encourage viewers to reconsider their notion
of drawing — here defined as “any unique work on paper.”
Featured artists include Russell Crotty, Ingrid Calame, Julie Mehretu,
Leonardo Drew, Anthony Goicolea, and others, both established and
emerging. Each of these artists regards the medium as a primary
creative outlet, ideal for experimentation. Some exploit traditional
qualities associated with drawing while others take the practice
into new territory — often challenging the definition of drawing
and blurring the lines between it and other media.
New
Directions has been organized by The Columbus Museum in Georgia
with participation from the Telfair Museum of Art. The exhibition
will be accompanied by an illustrated catalogue.
