African
American Art from the Permanent Collection
Jan. 30 - March 4, 2007
In
recent years, the Telfair has been actively collecting works by
African American artists. This winter, we are pleased to present
a selection of this artwork in celebration of Black History Month.
Highlights of this exhibition will include the Telfair's untitled
beach scene by Henry Ossawa Tanner of 1880, one of the few extant
marine paintings by the earliest African American artist to achieve
international acclaim at home and in Europe. Canvases by Harlem
Renaissance artists Romare Bearden and Jacob Lawrence will hang
alongside the more recent work of Sam Gilliam and Radcliffe Bailey.
Notable local artists such as John Mitchell and Luther Vann will
also be represented in this celebration of a growing and important
aspect of the Telfair's permanent collection.
