Contemporary
Classics: Selections from the Society of American Period
Furniture Makers
April
12- May 28, 2006
The
museum is pleased to host Contemporary Classics: Selections
from the Society of American Period Furniture Makers at the
Telfair Academy from April 12 through May 28. This landmark show is the
first major museum exhibition of work by select members of the Society
of American Period Furniture Makers (SAPFM). Established in 1999,
the Society includes both professional furniture makers and highly
skilled amateurs. SAPFM co-founder Steve Lash explains, “The
reproduction of a fine example of period furniture calls for more
than the mechanical ability of a copyist. It requires a talented
craftsperson that has the ability to interpret design and express
the character and finesse of the original. Our mission is to support
this point of view and promote education and appreciation for those
interested in making, restoring or conserving American period furniture.”
Contemporary
Classics presents various types of furniture including tables,
chairs, chests of drawers, tall case clocks, and other objects encompassing
a range of stylistic periods including William & Mary, Queen
Anne, Chippendale, American Federal, and Victorian. Of special local
significance is a stunning Six-Shell Newport Secretary by Gregory
Guenther, well-known Savannah furniture maker and conservator (pictured
