Selections
from the Walter O. Evans Collection
of African American Art
Jepson Center for the Arts I December 3, 2006
In the Jepson Center's Varnedoe Gallery, the Telfair is presenting
over 30 important works from The Walter O. Evans Collection of African
American Art. Dr. Evans, who was born in Savannah, has amassed one
of this country's finest private collections of African American
art. Named one of America's top 100 collectors by Art and Antiques magazine, Dr. Evans has been collecting art since the late 1970's,
beginning with his initial purchase of a portfolio of prints by
Jacob Lawrence. The Telfair's exhibition of selected works from
Dr. Evans's collection will feature a number of pioneering African
American artists working in a diverse range of styles and will include
pieces by Charles White, Aaron Douglas and Hughie Lee-Smith. Since
the Evans Collection contains the greatest number of works by 20th-century
giants Jacob Lawrence and Romare Bearden in private hands, this
exhibition will include masterpieces by each of those artists, including
Bearden's pivotal original collage, The Block II.
