Continuing
Traditions:
Native American Art of the Southwest from the Hanson Collection, Sept.
25, 2004 - Jan 2, 2005
In
conjunction with the Lowe exhibition, the Telfair presented Continuing
Traditions, an exhibition of Native American art from the American
Southwest collected over the past five decades by Stanley and Mary
Frances Hanson of Statesboro, Georgia. Dr. Hanson, professor emeritus
at Georgia Southern University, and his wife have traveled throughout
the Southwest collecting fine Native American jewelry, textiles,
baskets, paintings, and pottery, resulting in a strong local collection
of largely contemporary Native American art.
The
exhibition was curated by Savannah College of Art and Design professor
Denise Smith. Dr. Smith earned a Ph.D. in art history from the University
of New Mexico and has been a professor at SCAD since 1994. She worked
closely with Dr. and Mrs. Hanson to organize this first large-scale
public exhibition of their extensive collection. Smith selected
over 100 of the finest works from the Hanson collection for display
at the Telfair. The exhibition included notable Pueblo and Navajo
pottery dating from the 1920s to the present; traditional and contemporary
Navajo weavings; Pueblo paintings; outstanding pieces of hand-worked
Pueblo and Navajo jewelry; and Apache, Hopi, Navajo, and Sioux baskets.
