Volunteer Application
Front Desk / Information Assistant
Volunteers greet and welcome visitors, sell museum tickets, answer questions, and direct visitors to galleries and exhibits. Volunteers should be knowledgeable about current and upcoming exhibitions, programs, and events in the three museum buildings. Front Desk Volunteers are the welcoming face that greets the public!
Gallery Attendants
Volunteers are in galleries to provide security for artwork and hospitality to visitors by answering general questions. Gallery Attendant Volunteers are trained in visitor safety, security, museum rules and regulations, and general information about exhibits and programs.
Office Assistant
Volunteers assist staff with general office work in various departments such as marketing, membership, development, curatorial, and education. Duties may include filing, computer data entry, mailings, and assistance with projects or research. Computer skills are helpful, as well as accounting, marketing, and design experience for some positions.
Museum Stores
Telfair Museum Store Volunteers provide friendly customer service and assist in daily sales transactions. Volunteers help with packing and unpacking merchandise, and operate the point of sale system, telephone, and calculator. Retail volunteers will gain knowledge of inventory and back stock, and help manage the sales floor at the Jepson Center and Owens-Thomas House.
Research and Project Assistants
Special projects or research opportunities are available in many departments. The museum staff is happy to train volunteers who are interested in learning about art-related projects and the functioning of an art museum.
Anderson Art Library
Volunteers help catalogue, sort, and manage the reference library in the Jepson Center for the Arts which is used by members and staff.
Photographer
Volunteer photographers or interns document exhibits, programs, and events for promotional materials, newsletters, website, auction catalogues and other event related publications, as well as media/press releases and archival records.
Membership Volunteer
Volunteers help promote museum memberships and benefits at events, museum exhibition openings, the Jepson Live series, and other museum functions. Membership volunteers staff membership and information tables and will be well versed in the various membership levels and benefits they provide. Volunteers should be outgoing, enjoy meeting and talking with the public, as well as current museum members.
Special Events & Fundraisers
The museum has several major fundraising events each year. Special Events Volunteers help with event planning, preparations, setup, and clean up. A wide variety of skills and talents are needed to conduct successful fundraisers that support the museum, education programs, and collections. Volunteers are called upon to help with marketing promotions, clerical tasks, mailings, and hands-on help during the events.
ArtZeum Interactive Gallery for Children
Volunteers help children discover and explore hands-on exhibits and activities to learn about and understand art, architecture, and the artistic process. Volunteers answer visitor’s questions, restock materials, and clean up after gallery activities.
Gardeners, Owens-Thomas House Garden
Volunteers maintain the formal gardens, weeding, pruning, transplanting, and watering with other volunteers who have green thumbs and an interest in horticulture. Gardeners work in groups on seasonal projects and individually year round.
Preparator Assistant or Intern
Volunteers will assist curators and preparators in galleries and behind the scenes. Basic matting skills, experience handling art and installing art work and sculpture, and collection management experience are desirable. Volunteers will be trained and work with staff supervision.
Docent Program
Docents complete a six month training program and give educational tours of the museum buildings and exhibitions. For information about the Docent Program please contact the Docent Coordinator, Education Department, at 912.790.8827.
College Internships
The museum’s internship program provides college students and recent graduates with practical work experience and in-depth training in the museum profession. Interns work under the supervision of the museum’s professional staff and contribute to projects, gain insight into the functions of individual departments, and learn about the museum’s collections, exhibitions, and programs for visitors. Unpaid internships for college students are available throughout the year on a full or part time basis. The number of positions varies according to departmental needs, and opportunities may range from several months to a full year. Paid internships are dependent upon grant support availability. Academic credit and requirements are coordinated with student’s professors or advisors. Click here for more information about internships
