Planned Giving - The Mary Telfair Legacy Society

The Telfair Museum of Art began with a legacy, the result of one woman’s desire to enrich not just the lives of her fellow Savannahians, but of all visitors to their city.

In 1875 Mary Telfair bequeathed her home, furnishings, books, works of art, and a small endowment for the establishment of a local art museum. Today, with the 1951 bequest of the Owens-Thomas House to the museum by Margaret Gray Thomas, and a $3.9-million bequest in 1989 from Gertrude West Hollowbush contributing to its growth and impact, the Telfair stands as a glowing testament to the enduring legacy of one visionary woman, one visionary gift giver.

The Mary Telfair Legacy Society recognizes members and friends of the museum who have demonstrated a lasting commitment to the Telfair through their estate plans, through a life income arrangement, or by making significant gifts of art to the museum.

You need not be wealthy to leave a legacy to the Telfair through estate or financial planning. Planned giving can be as simple as making a bequest in your will or naming the museum as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy or retirement plan. There may also be substantial tax benefits to you as a result of your gift.

Planned giving ensures the Telfair’s ability to reach generations to come. Information about planned giving and membership in the Mary Telfair Legacy Society is available by calling 912.790.8863.
